In Java 5.0 beta 2, the method Arrays.asList's signature has been changed from
List<E> asList(E[] array)to
List<E> asList(E... array)
You should watch out for it because now you can pass any object to asList, not just arrays, so the compiler won't make sure the objects you're passing it are arrays. It removes some type safety. For example, the following code is now completely valid:
List a = Arrays.asList(5);
List b = Arrays.asList("hi");
Object[] c = null, d = null;
List e = Arrays.asList(c, d);
Josh Bloch said this change was made so you could easily make almost-literal lists like:
private static final List<String> SOME_LIST = Arrays.asList("A", "B", "C");
While I think Java language needs literal lists, sets, and maps, I have some problems with this implementation of literal lists:
Arrays classList has funny semantics: you can't add or remove elements, but you can use the set method to change the values (this is only because this method is implemented as a change to Arrays.asList, where these semantics used to make sense)I think this was a bad change and is the worst change Josh Bloch has made to Java. Unfortunately, Java 1.5 code freeze begins soon, and even though it would be very easy to change back the signature, and make a new method Collections.list(E... els), it probably won't happen, and the JDK will be stuck with this design choice forever.

With this new method, if you pass in an array, would you get a list containing the elements of the array, or a list containing one element, the passed-in array object? If its a list containing the elements, thats inconsistan, and if it is not, then its going to break code.

This means that Arrays.asList(null) behaves as it used to; it assumes you passed it a null array, not a single varargs argument of null. Personally I think this feature, surely done for backwards compatibility, is not intuitive.
